James H. Drummond
James H. Drummond retired from MCC in 2005 after 37 years of service to the college.
He attended Michigan State University Oakland (now Oakland University), and graduated
as salutatorian of the University’s charter class. He taught at Frankenmuth High School,
where he coached the runner-up state champion debate team. From there he moved on
to Flint in 1966 to teach at Northern High School, returning to Oakland University
to earn a Master’s degree, this time graduating first in his class. He then began
his career at Flint Community Junior College (now MCC) in 1968 as professor of English.
He received the Outstanding Faculty member award and was twice recognized as a Master
Teacher by the University of Texas Center on Community College Education. At the same
time he was teaching at MCC, he became a Consultant-Evaluator for the Higher Learning
Commission and served on the accreditation teams at more than 40 colleges. An active
member of the Friends of the Mott Library until2018, he has also served with a number
of community groups, including the Genesee Literary Network and the Christ Enrichment
Center board, receiving the Christ Enrichment Center’s Azell Cromwell Award as the
outstanding volunteer.
Jim passed away on May 13, 2021. He has been greatly missed!
