Jazz legend Sherm Mitchell was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. Sherm lived his life for music and died on May 4, 2013 at the age of 83 from cancer.
Mitchell worked 20 years for GM before beginning a long career in musical instrument repair. He later owned his own business, Sherm’s Musical Instrument.
When Mitchell wasn't in the shop, he was playing music. Although known for his trombone, Sherm was also proficient on the flute and saxophone. He traveled the world playing his music.
Congressman Don Riegle spoke of Sherm’s accomplishments, which are noted in The Congressional Record. He reported that Sherm played with such talents as jazz artists Clark Terry, J.C. Heard, Joe Henderson, Sonny Stitt, and Errol Garner.
A supporter of education, Sherm often gave of his time and talents to Mott Community College and The Foundation for MCC. He will be sorely missed.
