The English Acquisition Program at Mott Community College includes courses specifically designed courses and support services specifically designed for academic English. The English language courses, called English Language for Academic Purposes, are designed to immerse English language learners into the subject matter of academic studies. The program also includes services for academic support and cultural acclimation..
ENGLISH for Academic Purposes (ELAP) are intensive college credit courses at MCC that assist non-native speakers of English to succeed in an English-speaking academic environment. Students who have already acquired basic English language skills will learn how to communicate ideas in an academic setting by reading and understanding discipline-specific content, conducting scholarly research, engaging in academic discussions, and undertaking college-level assignments. The courses are included as part of an integrated part-time or full-time course load along with other college credit courses that focus on academic study and American college culture as part of an immersion approach to acquire English for success in college.
ELAP-110 English for Academic Purpose: Intermediate Level (5 Credits)
This course is designed for degree seeking students who speak English as a second language and have received beginning level training in the English language. The course provides an intensive integrated approach to learn English for academic purposes. Students develop speaking and listening skills for participating in college discussions and presentations, improve reading fluency of discipline-specific texts, and develop academic writing styles and vocabulary in multiple academic disciplines to prepare for advanced English for Academic Purposes.
ELAP-120 English for Academic Purpose: Advanced Level (5 Credits)
This course is designed for degree seeking students who speak English as a second language and have received intermediate level training in the English language. The course provides an intensive integrated approach for learning advanced English for academic purposes. Students develop speaking and listening skills using more advanced complex topics, improve reading fluency using authentic high-level academic texts across disciplines, and acquire the vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures needed for college writing for multiple academic disciplines.
The ELAP courses provide an intensive approach to learning English at an accelerated rate by integrating reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills during the class sessions which students acquire through an intensive study requirement outside of class. Students will engage in approximately 16.5 hours of English language immersion on a weekly basis through the following course components.
Class sessions are held twice per week for 2 ½ hours each session and will focus on strategic processes for integrating reading, writing, listening, and speaking through critical thinking in multiple academic disciplines.
Students are required to complete reading and writing assignments using a variety of resources, tools and materials either acquired by the student or provided by the college.
Listening and speaking sessions take place in the World Languages and Cultures Center. Students are required to meet with a trained tutor for a customized experience to gain listening and speaking skills in the context of multiple academic disciplines.
Using self-paced online courseware, ELAP students complete an assessment that customizes an English grammar program with lessons, exercises, and assessments based on individualized needs.
Students enrolled in ELAP will have the opportunity to integrate their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills for service in the community as "International Student Ambassadors". As an ambassador, students will have the opportunity to share their cultures and experiences in their homelands with a live audience either on campus or in the community.
Every year as part of the International Institute, MCC offers Culture and Language Exchange Partnerships which provide opportunities for individuals from the campus and the community to engage in cultural and language exchange for increased global awareness and understanding. CLEP offers events throughout the year for CLEP members to attend for genuine exchange of ideas from a variety of global and cultural perspectives. Although participation is not required, ELAP students are highly encouraged and provided incentives to participate. For more information phone email debra.gibes@mcc.edu or phone (810) 410-1050
Both international and domestic students participate in the I-Pal project. These students are interested in making friends with people who are different than themselves and build inter-connected communities. Students who wish to become an I-Pal complete an application and complete preparation activities. Then students are matched with someone locally, nationally, or internationally who is different from themselves relative to race, ethnicity, nationality, and/or religion. You and your new I-pal will share letters, emails, and virtual meetings to build a friendship based on interracial understanding, intercultural communication, and global awareness. For more information phone email debra.gibes@mcc.edu or phone (810) 410-1050.
Free tutoring is provided to Mott students for courses in which they are enrolled. Services begin the second week of each semester and close for the week of finals. For more information contact peer.tutoring@mcc.edu or phone (810) 232-4696.
