Students can work up to nineteen hours per week with a maximum of eight hours per day, depending upon the needs of the employer and their financial award. Students working eight hours in a day are entitled to an unpaid 30 minute lunch period and two paid 15 minute breaks. All students working four consecutive hours are entitled to a paid 15 minute break to be taken at the supervisor's discretion. Eating at the reception area should be avoided (see the "Student's Responsibilities" section).
Students are hired by employers on a semester to semester basis. Continued employment is based upon financial aid eligibility, enrollment in no less than the required number of credit hours for the semester (see "Who is Eligible" for credit hour requirements) and a mutual agreement between the student and the employer. It is recommended that both parties discuss their work relationship when planning for the upcoming semester.
Student Employment Job Request Forms are used by the employer to request student employees. It is the employer's responsibility to initiate the request approximately one month before the commencement of the following semester to help ensure a smooth transition between semesters and an adequate pool of applicants.
Student Employment Referral Forms (see Appendix A) are obtained by students from the Student Employment Center and list the amount of their award and number of hours eligible to work. Students are responsible for obtaining referrals for each job and each semester they work. If a student is working 2 or more jobs, the Student Employment Referral Form reflects the total eligible hours per week and the total eligible hours must be divided between each department.
